RF2.0 Presented at the IAEA International Conference in Vienna

Bringing together leading scientists, engineers, and accelerator experts from around the world, the Second International Conference on Accelerators for Research and Innovation, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency provided an international forum to discuss the latest advances in accelerator science, sustainability, and digital technologies for research infrastructures.

Representing various authors of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Evangelos Matzoukas participated in the conference as an invited speaker in the technical session Strategic Planning and Sustainability in Accelerator Infrastructure. During his presentation, he showcased the KIT contributions to the RF2.0 project, highlighting the institute’s interdisciplinary research on intelligent, energy-aware, and sustainable accelerator technologies.

The presentation covered several key developments within RF2.0 project, including

  • data-driven power consumption profiling for accelerator facilities,
  • multi-objective optimization of energy storage systems to balance operational cost and CO₂ emissions,
  • AI-driven beam tuning using Bayesian Optimization for faster and more efficient accelerator operation,
  • development of a structured sustainability assessment framework for evaluating the environmental and operational performance of large-scale research infrastructures.

These research activities demonstrate RF2.0’s integrated approach to combining accelerator physics, artificial intelligence, energy systems, and sustainability assessment to improve both the operational efficiency and environmental performance of future accelerator facilities.

By leveraging advanced digital technologies alongside physics-based expertise, the project supports the development of more intelligent, autonomous, and sustainable research infrastructures while maintaining the high standards of reliability and scientific excellence required by modern accelerator facilities.

The conference provided an excellent opportunity to present RF2.0’s latest achievements to the international accelerator community, exchange ideas with experts from leading laboratories, and foster new collaborations.

Participation in the IAEA conference further highlights the project’s contribution to advancing innovative technologies that will shape the next generation of sustainable research infrastructures under the Horizon Europe programme.
