RF2.0 to Showcase Project Results at ESSRI 2026

This year´s 8th Workshop on Energy for Sustainable Science at Research Infrastructures, will take place in Salerno, Italy, from 30 September to 2 October 2026. Since its launch in 2011, ESSRI has established itself as a leading forum for sharing best practices and advancing sustainable research infrastructure operations and is therefore the perfect platform to disseminate our RF2.0 results.

 The organizers highlight:
“The conference will provide a forum for sharing experiences on emerging energy-efficient technologies, innovative approaches to energy management, current project practices, and life-cycle assessments, while also opening the floor to discussions about future directions and evolving global needs. A special focus will be placed on engaging pre-doctoral researchers, encouraging their active participation in workshop dialogues”1

RF2.0 at ESSRI: From Madrid to Salerno

The RF2.0 journey within the ESSRI community began two years ago at ESSRI 2024 in Madrid, where we introduced the project’s vision, objectives, and first activities to stakeholders from across Europe. We are delighted to return to the conference in 2026 with a strong delegation of speakers from across the consortium. Speakers from KIT, DESY, and ALBA will showcase the RF2.0 results. Beyond these speakers, other members of the consortium – from CERN and HZB – will attend the conference to engage with the community and contribute to discussions.

 RF2.0 contributions to ESSRI 2026

1 October

Falastine Abusaif (KIT)
“From Operational Scenarios to Lifetime Energy Costs: A Data-Driven Cross-Facility Analysis of European Accelerator Infrastructures”
👉Parallel Session 1

Dwayne Spiteri (DESY)
“RF 2.0 project on flexible running of data centers by using the backup as storage”
👉Parallel Session 2

Francis Perez (ALBA)
“Solid State Amplifiers Advancements in RF2.0  (HZB, ALBA & companies COMMTIA and CRYOELECTRA)
👉Parallel Session 3

The conference will also feature two RF2.0 poster contributions from our PhD students:

Evangelos Matzoukas (KIT)
“Improving Injection Efficiency in Accelerators Using Artificial Intelligence-Based Optimization Methods”

Malik Muhammad A. (KIT)
“Predictive Battery Control for Peak Shaving in Karlsruhe Research Accelerator”

2 October

The RF2.0 consortium’s contribution will conclude with a forward-looking presentation by Giovanni De Carne (KIT), entitled “ESSRI 2028 @ KIT”.
In this presentation, our RF2.0 Coordinator will officially introduce the next edition of the ESSRI conference, which will be hosted by KIT in Karlsruhe in 2028. This announcement highlights both KIT’s and RF2.0’s strong commitment to advancing sustainability in research infrastructures and provides an opportunity to invite the international ESSRI community to continue the discussion on energy-efficient and environmentally responsible research facilities.

We look forward to meeting colleagues and stakeholders in Salerno and sharing the latest RF2.0 results with the ESSRI community.
